Lebanon Week in London

Join us for a week of Lebanon-themed events in London as part of the Institute for Global Prosperity (UCL) 10th Anniversary to recognise the work we’ve been doing in Lebanon with our partners, citizen scientists and other academics.

Dates: 18 - 22 March 2024

The theme of the week is ‘The politics of decolonial investigations and the ethics of solidarity’ and will bring together academics, thinkers, citizen scientists and innovators to explore the kinds of ethical forms of knowledge production and social solidarity that must drive action towards better social, economic and environmental futures, that challenge colonial structures of domination and global epistemic injustice.

We will also be discussing the key challenges and opportunities for developing a Green New Deal for Lebanon and the MENA region. The imminent threats of climate change call for a swift and comprehensive approach that combines sustainable economic development, decolonial politics, and ecological responsibility for a more equitable and resilient future for the region.

Vital Lebanon: Uncertainty, Solidarity, Activism & Energetics

This conference aims to discuss, connect and reflect on the complexity of the current crises by focusing on both theories and stories about the forces for good that help to support and sustain us. In particular, the conference explores the themes of uncertainty, solidarity, activism and energetics to identify new intersections between collapse, potential futures, emancipatory politics and environmental regeneration. A series of keynotes will be held on each theme, and interventions will be grouped into panels on each of the four themes.

Representing Refuge: The Role of the Arts in Conditions of Mass Displacement

Lebanon has the highest number of refugees per capita in the world. Ahead of World Refugee Day on 20 June, this session will bring together members of UCL’s Institute for Global Prosperity and the RELIEF Centre to discuss the role of the arts in situations of mass displacement. We will see and hear poetry, documentary excerpts, photography, as well as a contribution to last year’s Venice Biennale. This will prompt a conversation around media and humanitarian representations of refuge and displacement, and how artistic expressions can open up new avenues of self-representation, research, and advocacy.

Fast Forward 2030 Roundtable

We would like to call a roundtable discussion so you can help us shape Fast Forward 2030 in Lebanon. Our aims are:

  • To hear from entrepreneurs who are already building businesses with positive environmental and social impact

  • To learn from Lebanon-based entrepreneurs about how we can make this initiative as useful as possible

  • To learn about other initiatives we can collaborate with

We will also have a short discussion about the SDGs in Lebanon, and the role entrepreneurship can play in achieving them.
