Burj el-Barajneh camp; one of our areas of inquiry at RELIEF, was established in 1950 and is located in the southern part of Beirut. It is one of twelve camps for Palestine refugees in Lebanon.
The camp is officially home to over 20,000 Palestinian refugees who live in an area of less than 0.3 km2, making it the most densely populated Palestinian camp in Lebanon today.
According to estimates gathered during my fieldwork in Burj el Barajneh camp in August 2018, the camp’s population has tripled in the past 3-4 years because of the influx of refugees from Syria into the camp, amounting to what is “locally” quoted as 60,000 refugees residing within this space.
